Dr James McLean is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder and upper limb surgical treatments and has a special interest in arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and reconstructive joint replacement surgery.

Dr McLean trained in orthopaedics both locally and internationally, graduating from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 2004 after completing nine years of post-graduate surgical training. During these nine years, he obtained additional orthopaedic surgery experience from centres of orthopaedic excellence across the globe, travelling to Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the USA.

Dr James McLean remains up-to-date with new developments and technical advancements in orthopaedic surgery and participates in continued educational activities. He has a keen interest in research, having co-authored multiple book chapters on upper limb conditions and publishing numerous research papers in peer-reviewed journals. His published work has led to him accepting multiple scholarships, grants, and prizes, including “Best Paper” awards.

In 2019, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy which helped him establish an interactive electronic database aimed at improving outcomes for patients undergoing surgery. Dr McLean continues to contribute to research and teaching and has evolved his practice to include the development of new diagnostic and treatment methods.

Dr James McLean’s primary goal is to obtain the best possible outcome for his patients and their families.
